W7 / LITERARY
Client: Conor O'Malley | Cleveland, OH | 2018
Perched amongst the tightly packed structures of Literary Road and the gracious front lawns of single family homes on West 7th Street, this four-unit structure acts as an inflection point between two distinct densities. Due to this responsibility, entries, material configuration, and formal geometries respond in ways that accentuate the differing scales and characteristics of each street. Inset unit entries are located on three facades at ground level to avoid lifeless sidewalk facing walls, while charred wood, poured in place concrete and stucco break the scale of the structure vertically. Along West 7th Street the upper levels of each unit step back from the building perimeter to allow open patios on the second floor while the end units taper to the corners, creating a unified profile broken only by thin vertical breaks at demising lines. Above this profile, fourth floor roof lounges take advantage of skyline views to the northeast.
